The above two photos are of the steam driven winch. A tower and wire cable was used to lift the granite blocks out of the quarry. I believe the vertical pipes feed steam into those two cylinders, pushing and pulling connecting rods to spin flywheels. The right cylinder is a bit hard to see. There seems to be the remains of a brake on the left reel and on the far left a ratchet type catch. There is definite concrete pedestal under the left hand equipment, so it's right were it is supposed to be. There seems to be three spools, with wire rope still on one. I also see a power axle that has a notch in it allowing power to be turned only in one direction, a clutch. This winch is say 30 feet from a deep quarry. A man working the lever, in the first photo, couldn't see into the quarry, I wonder how he communicated with the workers down there. And I don't see how the lifted rock was swung out of the quarry, another wire rope? It must have been pulled toward the winch which is right next to the waste rock cart.
